Passive Aggressive ways to pay your rent — Part I

I pay a lot for a closet-size space in New York. To make things worse, my building is under construction and I just got a smoking neighbor (smoke constantly seeps under my walls (and there’s no law for that, I checked)). In short, I’m not liking my apartment anymore.

The management company does nothing. I have no power. I’m starting my passive aggressive rent paying. Check back next month for Part II

Newsflash — Don’t install mp3 players in the subway

Here is a great idea in theory, but the execution falls short. There are billboards in the subway that allow you to plug in your headphones and listen to John Legend’s CD. Neat idea, right?

Someone (I swear it wasn’t me) decided to pull off the protective cover and take the contents. I wonder what type of device the thief nabbed. Photos below:

UPDATE: The batteries that were left over are now gone too!

Google uses past searches for adwords

Here’s something that caught me off-guard. I’m selling my PC laptop and first searched for VGN-SZ330P in google. Then after not finding anything, I searched for “laptop pricing”, to see if there was some type of laptop blue book.

In Adwords, I saw an ad for a VGN-SZ330P — my previous search (Screenshot below).

You can replicate the results by going to google

1. Type vgn-sz330p and search
2. Then search for: laptop pricing

Crosby *update*

Jen over at the gothamist picked up the Crosby story and helped get the word out about Joey’s realty woes.

The bad news is Crosby Connection (on crosby) closed. The good news is they’ve moved! They are now located within Parisi bakery, just 4 blocks east of their old spot. (290 Elizabeth St)

There are a few good things that come from the move, including bigger sandwiches, fresh bread right from the source, and possibly some pizza. Being indoors will also help keeps their expert sandwich making fingers warm and toasty too.

NBC reports about the taxicab vulnerability

Jay DeDapper read my post about hacking a New York city taxi and did a more investigative piece about the potential unauthorized access. The Taxi and Limousine Commission claims everything has been fixed and is highly unlikely to happen again. However, Jay and his producer both had error messages in their cabs within the past week (and I’m sure others have) too.

You can also read their article about it too.

Rollover Text Messages

Hey AT&T (formally Cingular)

Isn’t your whole schtick; it’s your minutes, keep them? I personally think that’s quite a nice feature.

But what about my 200 text messages? The same philosophy should stand with unused text messages month to month. Get on that please.

So many Adobe products, even tech support is confused

I just got off an infuriating call. I was transferred 6 times to different departments and people within adobe. The one common theme: They didn’t even know they had a product called FlashPaper.

The question was simple. Can I programmatically edit the SWF file that FlashPaper creates? In other words, is there some type of FlashPaper actionscript?

Not only did they not understand the question, but 2 of the 6 people I spoke with didn’t know what FlashPaper was. Two other people immediately transferred me. One other person was inexplicably from “licensing”. The final guy tried to transfer me again and I hung up.

I couldn’t get too angry, because here is the list of products they have. Call tech support about anything other than Photoshop or Flash and you’re in for a transferring marathon.

Welcome to *****ship

Here is the comments section of a recent article on digg. Almost every comment is censored away.

As part of dontcensorme.com, I created a digg comments section that shows censored away comments aren’t always censored for the right reasons.

What happened here?

I was recently at the Borough Hall stop in Brooklyn when I passed by this phone.

It takes a second to figure out what happened and realize that was not a happy phone conversation. Could you imagine seeing this conversation? He (or she) hung up that phone so hard that it split in half. Any Hulk sightings recently in the subway?

The best non-default option in iTunes

sound.jpg

I personally hate when different mp3s play at different volumes. You have to constantly switch the audio level to compensate. Unknown to me, iTunes has an option called “Sound Check” under the Playback options in Preferences. It normalizes your songs, so that their volume remains constant during playback! It does this without changing the original mp3. So you can always switch it off.

Why is this not a default option? Who would not want this?
